For those applying for SSDI or those on Face Book

Postby Carolyn, Director » Tue Feb 09, 2010 11:43 pm

I picked this up on the Yahoo group for Fibro Leaders and I wanted to share it with you

A privacy concern about Facebook came up recently. I got a call from a doctor who reviews disability applications, regarding a fibro patient I care for. She is trying to get an SSI disability. She had recently asked me to increase the amount of narcotic painkillers I prescribe, which I did. The reviewer told me he always looks up his subjects on Facebook and other social networks. He told me that on Facebook this patient has recently started posting complaints that her ex-husband who is a drug abuser has moved back in with her. Maybe the extra narcotics she wanted are to cover what he may be "borrowing". I don't know if she's getting her SSI disability approved, but now I'm worried about my prescriptions.

I hope it is okay for me to alert members to something like this.
I'm trying to be respectful of my place as a guest on someone else's group.

That's a smart way to investigate people.

Unless they (the patient) has the settings on their account to "friends only". That way, unless you are a friend (which has to be approved by the account holder) the general public doesn't have access to your account. They can see you have one, but can not look at your status & info.

These days, people are becoming more aware of privacy settings.

Not quite true Julia, as the people who run Face Book also can go in and see what you are posting, along with the Feds. The Feds do random checks to see if certain words kick in their auto scanning for possible terrorists or ???? However, if you do limit who can check out your site, others are not able too...only what I've just mentioned.
